In the framework of the transition towards a circular economy model, the ECO FLOW project, co-financed by the Interreg VI-A Greece–Italy 2021–2027 Programme, focuses on the reuse of treated wastewater, with the objective of fostering coordination among stakeholders following an initial needs assessment phase.
The expected outcomes of the project will lay the foundations for a cross-border roadmap on wastewater management, based on the adoption of new technologies and pilot testing. The involved partners, drawn from different regions within the programme area (Apulia, Basilicata, Western Greece, the Ionian Islands and Epirus), will play a leading role, as they are jointly responsible for key processes such as the supply of drinking water, the collection of wastewater through public sewer networks, and its treatment and purification.
The primary goal of ECO FLOW is to explore and test potential new applications of wastewater treatment technologies, through the implementation and replication of the successful pilot plant developed under the previous Re-water project.
Specifically, the Apulian demonstration site, to be developed by AQP in cooperation with ARIF, will focus on assessing the impact of reusing treated wastewater in agriculture through innovative treatment technologies. The assessment will cover both the growth performance of young olive plants and the detection of any residual emerging pollutants in irrigated soils.
Furthermore, the project aims to deliver training sessions to strengthen skills related to wastewater treatment technologies.
